REFORMING AEI I+D
Elimination of technical barriers in networks with high penetration of renewables and power electronics using STATCOM devices and HVDC links based on network formation. Code: PID2021-127788OA-I00.
Description of the project
REFORMING it aims to remove the technical barriers to the future electricity system based on 100% renewable energy by developing analysis tools to help operators and manufacturers make decisions during the specification of new assets, network code definitions and key aspects related to the operation. and control of the transport network. This future grid scenario envisages a high proportion of renewable energy, together with non-generating units (HVDC converters and distributed STATCOM) to support the grid during this transition.
REFORMING will devote particular interest to the use of modular multilevel converter (MMC) technology for HVDC and STATCOM units, considering both their additional degrees of freedom (compared to conventional VSCs) and their internal capability to energy storage. In addition, the use of additional energy storage will be considered for both HVDC systems and especially for STATCOMs, in order to provide combined active and reactive power support actions. In addition, REFORMING will consider the extensive use of grid formation control in HVDC and STATCOM converters to explore the capabilities and benefits that such control can bring to the future energy system.
